How many people attend the meetings?
Tadoku Talk: We average around 20 participants per meeting, ranging from as many as 40 early in the semester and around 10-15 near finals. You can get a sense of past attendance from our Instragram (@tadoku_talk). Most attendees are UH students learning Japanese. We also have a few Japanese exchange students studying English through the HELP and NICE programs who attend the meetings. Since the exchange students are visiting on temporary programs that vary in length (e.g., four weeks to one year), their participation can vary throughout the semester. In the past, we have had an average of 1 to 4 exchange students who visit throughout the semester. At most, we have had 20 exchange students visit for particular events.
Classic Tadoku: We usually have around 5-10 participants per meeting, most of whom are regulars at both meeting formats. However, we only just started offering this format since last semester (Spring 2026).
Do I need to bring my own reading materials?
You may bring your own materials or borrow from our library. We have a collection of over 450 books in Japanese in the library, including 150 graded readers (books made especially for Japanese learners). You can learn a little more about these materials here: Our Library.
